Guitar of Chet Atkins

  • Chet Atkins

I can’t remember when I didn’t play the guitar. And I can’t remember when playing the guitar didn’t lift me up to seventh heaven or thereabouts. Sleeping and eating were never nearly as important to me, and up to the time I was twelve, there wasn’t a pretty girl within a hundred miles who looked half as good as my old guitar. Ever since I first heard guitar music, I knew I had to learn to create that sound — the sound that I thought was the most beautiful music in the world. I still think so. Chet Atkins

This DVD lesson is for intermediate and advanced fingerstyle guitarists. Chet performs and describes in detail, phrase by phrase, the playing of nine of his classic arrangements. An 80 page tab/music booklet is included.

Someone once asked me to estimate how many guitar lessons I’ve had in my lifetime, Chet has said. The answer is simple — none. There were no teachers in our neighborhood when I was learning. And if there had been I doubt whether they would have taught me with that shabby guitar of mine. But I kept a lookout for any stray ‘picker’ that wandered into town and if he knew any new runs I would learn them before he left.

You are fortunate — your teacher for this lesson is one of the foremost fingerstyle guitar masters in the history of the guitar. Have fun!

Titles include: Maybelle, Petite Waltz, Happy Again, Londonderry Aire, When You Wish Upon A Star, Young Thing, Bye Bye Blackbird, Mr. Bojangles and Lover Come Back

John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads (John Denver & Kids Series) Reviews

John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads (John Denver & Kids Series)

This brilliant picture book adaptation of the first hit song of John Denver is all about roots, family, and country. Set in Appalachia, a humorously diverse bunch of relatives and their in-laws go up, down and around the hills of West Virginia to converge by car, pickup, and motorcycle to a family reunion at Grandma and Grandpas country home. True to Appalachian style, Canyon portrays it all as if on a quilt, complete with little stitches between the fabric. The lyrics demand to be sung–the hardback edition comes with a CD of John Denver singing his classic in this John Denver & Kids book series.

The Storyteller’s Nashville: A Gritty & Glorious Life in Country Music

The Storyteller’s Nashville: A Gritty & Glorious Life in Country Music

The Nashville we know today is a glitzy big business characterized by entertainment lawyers, social media strategies, and buff, shiny entertainers writing about pick-up trucks, tractors, and dirt roads in air-conditioned, corporate offices. But, back before the coats of glamour and media spotlights, Nashville was a very different place.
“The Storyteller’s Nashville” is about a fabled town that once was, but no longer exists. The Nashville that Tom T. Hall wrote about — the “hairy-legged town” where hungry, broke musicians searched for their next meal, pill-popping pickers scammed their next hit, and writers found art in moments of quiet, solitary desperation – is the true foundation upon which today’s modern Music City rests. “The Storyteller’s Nashville” is also about a man whose songs irrevocably altered the history of that same town as well as the music for which it remains best known. And, while “The Storyteller’s Nashville” is no longer an up-to-date picture of Music City, it is a valuable window into the nature of the art and creation during its formative days. In the early 1980s, someone asked Johnny Cash what Nashville was really like. Cash said, “Just read The Storyteller’s Nashville by Tom T. Hall. Everything you need to know is in there.”
Tom T. Hall is a Country Music Hall of Famer for many reasons, including the hit songs he wrote, his three decades as a popular entertainer, and the fact that he and a wild-eyed pack of youngsters that included Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller, Mickey Newbury and John Hartford elevated the language of country music from simple tales into something akin to literature. The wondrous George Jones called Hall “By far the all-time greatest songwriter/storyteller that country music has ever had.”
Initially published in 1979, this revised and expanded edition of The Storyteller’s Nashville includes Tom T. Hall’s thoughts on the years after 1979: he shares his deep friendship with Jimmy Carter; brings us Johnny Cash’s thoughts on humility; and reflects on the challenging confluences of celebrity, art and the most dangerous addiction known to musicians: applause.
“The Storyteller’s Nashville” is illuminating and hilarious, ribald and touching and, above all, entertaining. It’s Tom T.’s greatest song and it’s now longer. And even better.
