Pilgrim

Guaranteed to work or your money back – PLEASE NOTE ALL MONIES FROM THIS SALE GO TO A 501 (C)3 NO KILL ANIMAL SHELTERMarty Stuart has always been a terrific singer and picker (as well as a smart, ardent country music historian and collector), but only rarely has he written songs worthy of his other talents. However, on The Pilgrim, a concept album that tells a true story from Stuart’s Mississippi hometown, he has finally found a theme to inspire a whole collection of substantial songs. The title character falls in love with a woman at work, discovers too late she’s married, watches her husband kill himself, flees the town for years of drunken wandering, and finally finds redemption in religion and marriage. Here are the great themes of hillbilly music–infidelity, violence, rambling, alcoholism, church and family–wrapped up in an ongoing narrative. It’s not surprising that Stuart can get satisfying results from this material when he reaches back to older musical styles and such guest performers as Ralph Stanley, George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Earl Scruggs. More impressive is the way he makes the same themes work with the cranked-up, drum-driven country-rock of modern Nashville, which seems to have forgotten how gripping the dark side of human drama can be. –Geoffrey Himes

I don’t hear a whole lot of country music that I like. Some, yes, but I very quickly hit my “twang” limit and I run away screaming. This CD, however, is just brilliant. This is a concept CD, and the concept is clear enough not to need explanation. The story line runs seamlessly throughout, and Stuart’s guest artist are very well-chosen and wisely used (of course, when is Johnny Cash’s rich baritone ever unwelcome? To my mind, never). Stuart looks at the world from many perspectives, including my favorite, from that of a crow observing the world around him from atop a power pole. These songs look at a man who lost his love and nearly loses himself, and then finds his way again; it has great songwriting and characters as interesting as any good film. This is country music for thinking people, and I think it is quite a masterpiece. Highly recommended.

The hits kept coming and then the bottom dropped out, after “The Pilgrim” J.R. said you can never go back.

This album is one of the best albums of all time. The music is so sincere and from the heart, with some of the recordings done with just one take. I believe that he wrote all of this during some lonely times on Memphis streets, and his soul poured out into this album. He also has other close friends on the album who blend with his voice perfectly. It is too bad this album didnt sell more than it did, but it is an absolute gem.
