Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver: Live

Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver: Live

This live CD documents Billy Joe Shavers 65th birthday tribute held on August 16, 2004 at the Paramount Theatre inAustin, Texas. It was an all-star affair for the legendary performer and songwriter, with Billy Joe performing four numbers to boot! The CD is enhanced with a bonus video of Todd Snider’s performance of “Waco Moon”. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Compadre. 2005.Fellow songwriters shower their love on Billy Joe Shaver throughout this concert recording from his 65th birthday bash in Austin. Whereas tribute albums typically feature a variety of performers interpreting the honoree’s material, here, many of the Texas troubadours choose to play their own songs influenced by Shaver or ones the rough-hewn renegade specifically requested for the occasion. The birthday boy proves his own best interpreter, opening the album with a hard-charging rendition of “Georgia on a Fast Train” and closing with the raucous resilience of “Try and Try Again” (in which he deals with the death of his wife and his son) and the soulful transcendence of “Tramp on Your Street.” The between-song patter highlights the proceedings, with the respect Shaver receives from peers such as Guy Clark and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who brings tremulous heartbreak to Shaver’s “Hearts-a-Bustin'”) equaling the awe he elicits from younger troubadours such as Todd Snider and Jack Ingram. As Joe Ely suggests, no one has found “a way of combining the spiritual and the honky-tonk” quite like Billy Joe. –Don McLeese

Electric Shaver

NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILEAt first glance the laconic, laid-back country songwriter Billy Joe Shaver and his guitar-slingin’, supercharged blues-rocker son Eddy would seem to make an unlikely musical duo. But, like on 1996’s high-powered Tramp on Your Street and 1998’s acoustic and introspective Victory, the Shavers once again manage to meld their seemingly antithetical musical personalities in a manner that’s raw, powerful, and utterly moving. Billy Joe, who wrote or cowrote 11 of the 12 cuts on Electric Shaver, is a sort of footloose, back-street Texas poet-pilgrim whose greatest original songs infuse the stark imagery of sun-baked losers and outlaws with homespun earnestness and spiritual yearning. While at times the elder Shaver tended to be an indifferent, occasionally off-key singer, Eddy has proved the perfect antidote to his dad’s occasional vocal lethargy. On tunes such as the supercharged gospel shout “Try and Try Again,” the Tex-Mex working-man’s lament “Manual Labor,” and even a somber spiritual ode called “Slave at the Feet of the Queen,” Eddy’s searing electric lead work gooses Billy Joe’s vocals to new levels of expressiveness. –Bob Allen

I was there that night. The love for the man permeated the theater. Billy Joe has seen his share of hard times, but his faith in Jesus (even in these times when that seems to be a politically incorrect thing to say)and the love of his admiring fellow songwriters has gotten him through. The night after his son, Eddie, died (as Todd Snider, dropping his usual ironic stance so eloquently sings about in Waco Moon), Billy Joe was scheduled to play New Years Eve at Poodie’s, a honky-tonk in Spicewood, Texas. Billy Joe was, understandably, devastated. His friend, Willie Nelson, himself a Spicewood resident, got Billy Joe on stage and the two just played songs for each other until three in the morning. No dry eyes in the house.

I tell you all of that to give you a littel backgrond on Waco Moon and to give you an idea on how highly Billy Joe is held as a Texas institution.

At the birthday celebration, stars and soon-to-be stars stood in line to sing Billy Joe’s praises. It was one of the great musical nights of my life, and for those who missed it, at least you can get a feel for it through this excellent CD.

Kinky Friedman, who is running for Governor of Texas (and might win like a wrestler from Minnesota did, surprising everyone) has said that the day after his inauguration, he will install Billy Joe as the poet laureate of Texas. Listen to this CD, and you’ll get an idea why.

Billy Joe will, indeed, Live Forever.

This album has got to be higher than 1,986., May 15, 1999

Anyone with the slightest interest in country, prog country, or rock n roll needs to purchase this album. No question, Billy Joe Shaver is “pure” country, but with son Eddie by his side on guitar, Billy Joe is “pure country” with an edge. Eddie Shaver, who adds musical diversity and raw energy to the Shaver team on “Victory” and “Unshaven”, helps to kick start “Electric Shaver” into high gear from “Thunderbird” (the first track) on. In the liner notes a fella by the name of Kinky Friedman states that “Lyrically,” Billy Joe Shaver “sounds like what Shakespeare might have written if he was alive today scribbling on a cocktail napkin at the Broken Spoke”. Though the comparison might be drastic, Billy Joe Shaver is a legend, and he, certainly deserves better treatment than the 1,986 ranking on Amazon’s album sales.

Man does this album rock out!!!!!!!! From “Thunderbird” to “She Can Dance” this is pure Texas heaven. When Billy Joe does take it down a notch as on “I’ll Be Here” you don’t mind because this is the song you want to dance to with your bride. Billy Joe is in fine voice, the songs linger in the mind long afterwards. And, his son, Eddy, may be the best guitarist in Texas since SRV. Get yourself a copy and one for every friend you’ve got!
