Live At The US Festival, 1983

Waylon Jennings appeared at the US Festival on June 4, 1983. It was billed as Country Day, with Waylon performing alongside such artists as Willie Nelson, Alabama, Hank Williams, Jr., and Emmylou Harris. Waylon’s performance was one of the day’s many highlights, and he is joined onstage by wife Jessi Colter for a particularly memorable rendition of ‘Storms Never Last.’ The US Festival was held over two weekends in 1982 and 1983. Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple Computer, funded the concerts and accompanying technology exposition, as well as the construction of a brand-new outdoor venue in Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernadino, CA. Nearly every musical genre was represented by bands as diverse as U2, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, Ozzy Osbourne, Willie Nelson, Van Halen, The Police and The Clash. Over the combined seven days of the festival, more than one million people passed through the entrance gates.

Country Blues Guitar Festival

Besides being one of the most talented blues guitarists living today Stefan Grossman is also lucky. His luck is combined with a self-determined will to understand, master, and then teach and describe to others the music that he has learnt first hand from such legendary bluesmen as Skip James, Son House, Fred McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White, Mance Lipscomb and Rev. Gary Davis. This CD combines two albums of Country Blues that Stefan recorded in England in 1977 with his friend Jo Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper and Sam Mitchell. The music spans from Delta to Texas to Piedmont blues. And for guitarists this enhanced CD features a tab/music PDF folder that has all the arrangements transcribed.

I’m a huge Waylon fan and I am always looking for anything Waylon that I don’t have. I picked up this and don’t regret it. It is cool to see Waylon playing in a festival session, I don’t have any other Waylon videos where he is playing in the daytime. the first Two songs have some errors in sound and video but they seem to get in under control and the rest of show is good quality. There is a interview with Waylon before the show that gives you a look at Waylon during a time that he was obviously abusing some heavy substances. If you are a Waylon collector this is a great addition.

Can’t add much to what has been said, but this has Women Do Know How To Carry On, which to my knowledge is not on any live Waylon recordings or videos, bootleg or commercial.

This is an absolutely fantastic show — the set list is perfect and Waylon is in top form. The interplay with the band (and with Jessie when she comes on stage) is amazing as well. Like the amazing Waylon Live album from 76, this shows everything that made him great. There are a few video glitches, but this is such a fantastic set that you have to overlook them. Fans need it, but it’s also a perfect introduction to Waylon Jennings, better than any “greatest hits” record could do.

Country Blues Guitar is a relaxing mix of some classic and not so classic folk blues songs that are easy listening. I put it on in the background as I work. I have a similar album with Grossman and Rory Block and it was reason I bought this one.
