The Legend of George Jones: His Life and Death

The Legend of George Jones: His Life and Death

George Jones lived a storied life, but his career was not without controversies. This book reveals fascinating, intimate details about the life of George Jones that have never before been published. Charlene and Peanutt Montgomery, who were George’s closest friends and confidants over a thirty-year period and the songwriters for the vast majority of the songs that George recorded, are the authors of this highly entertaining book. Their strong bonds with and admiration for George come shining through, even when writing about the less-than-flattering incidents and times that make up part of the story.

This book contains a CD album of 12 songs written by George Jones and Peanutt Montgomery, including the never before released title song, The Legend of George Jones. Peanutt wrote 77 songs for George Jones over more than 30 years, all of which were top 40 songs, with some reaching #1 hit status. A variety of well-known country music artists sing the songs on the CD album. The album becomes a bonus treat for the readers.

I listened to the enclosed CD and in my opinion it isn’t worth the plastic it was recorded on. Out of 5 stars it deserves a big fat zero but I’ll be generous and give it a 1. Let’s start with The Legend Of George Jones. Not only are the words hard to understand but the tune is mournful sounding. All songs have more of a pop sound. You’re writing about the greatest singer of Country songs in the world and you do a CD like this? There must have been something in the air that day. One of the worst is A Drunk Can’t Be A Man. The last song on the CD wasn’t even recorded by George. The instrumentation is horrible. Way too much drums and lead guitar, nothing Country. The closest thing to real Country on the CD and it is a stretch as well is Someday My Day Will Come. There is one song, “Right Won’t Touch A Hand”, where the timing is completely off and the singer is constantly playing catch the band if I can. I just don’t know how Peanutt could think this is a proper tribute CD to George. Bottom line is buy this for the book but don’t expect much from the CD included.
