Roses In The Snow (Expanded & Remastered)

1980’s ROSES IN THE SNOW, her sixth consecutive gold solo album for Reprise. Produced by Brian Ahern, it was Harris’ second bluegrass-flavored album featuring Ricky Skaggs singing backup and playing lead and rhythm everything, along with superpicker Albert Lee and the rest of The Hot Band. The mostly acoustic ROSES IN THE SNOW presaged Emmylou’s move in that direction during the ’90s with her post-Hot Band outfit The Nash Ramblers, and is often cited by reviewers as one of the best albums of her career. It’s authentic Americana beauty!Emmylou Harris’s 1980 back-to-the-roots album marks a high point in her career. With stellar support from Tony Rice (acoustic guitar), Albert Lee (mandolin), and Ricky Skaggs (fiddle), Harris wanders comfortably and warmly through traditional-country and bluegrass pastures. Skaggs, Dolly Parton, and the Whites add beautiful harmonies as Harris slides effortlessly from the Carter Family to the Stanley Brothers to the Louvin Brothers to Paul Simon. Among the set’s peaks are Flatt & Scruggs’s “I’ll Go Stepping Too,” with Rice, Skaggs, Lee (on superb electric guitar), and Dobro master Jerry Douglas turning up the instrumental heat, and the spiritual “Jordan,” with Harris, Skaggs, Rice, and Johnny Cash engaging in buoyant four-part harmonies. The 2002 reissue adds a pair of unreleased bonus tracks to the mix. –Marc Greilsamer

Red Dirt Girl (Vinyl)

Red Dirt Girl (Vinyl)

Emmylou Harris’s first Nonesuch recording, Red Dirt Girl, was released in September 2000, and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album of the year. It was her first solo studio recording since 1995’s Wrecking Ball. The album was produced by Malcolm Burn, who previously worked with Harris engineering and mixing Wrecking Ball, and features Buddy Miller on lead guitar; Daryl Johnson on bass and drums; Malcolm Burn on piano, guitar, and bass; and Ethan Johns on drums, guitar, and other miscellaneous instruments. Harris wrote all but one of Red Dirt Girl’s 12 tracks, marking only the second time in her career that she has been so involved in the composition of an album. Dave Matthews sings a duet with Harris on the album, and Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, and Patty Griffin also contribute vocals.

This vinyl reissue is pressed at Record Industry on 2x140gm LPs and includes a download card.

NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILENestled in the sparest, most pristine musical surroundings of her career, Emmylou Harris delivers her most sublime vocal triumph with this 1987 collection of acoustic gospel songs. By this time, her voice had taken on a slight huskiness, which only strengthened its emotional power. Much of the credit belongs to Vince Gill, who adds tasteful mandolin runs and gorgeous tenor harmonies, as well Emory Gordy (bass, bass vocals) and Carl Jackson (guitar, baritone vocals). All four combine to make the a cappella “Bright Morning Stars” glow warmly and the ebullient “We Shall Rise” shine brightly. When Harris’s voice shivers on “Precious Memories” and soars on “If I Be Lifted Up,” the result is indeed spiritual. –Marc Greilsamer

Her Nonesuch debut is her first album of new material since the 300,000-selling, Grammy-winning “Wrecking Ball” of 1995 – and is an almost fully self-penneed effort. Produced by Malcolm Burn who engineered for Daniel Lanois on the last album, RED DIRT GIRL features Buddy Miller (guitar), Ethan Johns (guitar), Daryl Johnson (bass), Carlo Nuccio (drums). Recorded in New Orleans, the album includes a guest appearance by Dave Matthews (who duets oh “My Antonia”), plus vocal backup from Bruce Springsteen and Patty Scialfa (“Tragedy”), Kate McGarrigle, Jill Cuniff, and Patty Griffin.Consider this Emmylou Harris’s emancipation proclamation–an album that confirms that 1995’s adventurously atmospheric Wrecking Ball wasn’t an aberration, but a preview of more radical changes to come. Long the godmother of alternative-country’s traditionalist wing, Harris here writes songs with Luscious Jackson’s Jill Cunniff, sings a duet with Dave Matthews (“My Antonia”), and recruits Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa to provide harmonies on the album’s most compelling ballad (“Tragedy”). The production by Malcolm Burn applies sonic treatments of drum machines, shimmering guitars, and echoed vocals to a song cycle by Harris that is largely original and deeply personal, filled with dream imagery and evocations of a spiritual quest. While material such as “Michaelangelo” and “Bang the Drum Slowly” suffers from an arty ponderousness, it’s doubtful that Harris has ever recorded an album that means more to her than this one. –Don McLeese
