Guitar of Chet Atkins

  • Chet Atkins

I can’t remember when I didn’t play the guitar. And I can’t remember when playing the guitar didn’t lift me up to seventh heaven or thereabouts. Sleeping and eating were never nearly as important to me, and up to the time I was twelve, there wasn’t a pretty girl within a hundred miles who looked half as good as my old guitar. Ever since I first heard guitar music, I knew I had to learn to create that sound — the sound that I thought was the most beautiful music in the world. I still think so. Chet Atkins

This DVD lesson is for intermediate and advanced fingerstyle guitarists. Chet performs and describes in detail, phrase by phrase, the playing of nine of his classic arrangements. An 80 page tab/music booklet is included.

Someone once asked me to estimate how many guitar lessons I’ve had in my lifetime, Chet has said. The answer is simple — none. There were no teachers in our neighborhood when I was learning. And if there had been I doubt whether they would have taught me with that shabby guitar of mine. But I kept a lookout for any stray ‘picker’ that wandered into town and if he knew any new runs I would learn them before he left.

You are fortunate — your teacher for this lesson is one of the foremost fingerstyle guitar masters in the history of the guitar. Have fun!

(Book). The high standards set by Chet Atkins as a performer, recording artist, and record producer continue to inspire others. Complementing the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s exhibition Chet Atkins: Certified Guitar Player , this book honors one of America’s most influential musicians. To provide insight on the legend and his music, the Country Music Hall of Fame invited several experts to prepare essays, including Michael Cochran, Rich Kienzle, Walter Carter, and John W. Rumble. Chet only bestowed his degree of “Certified Guitar Player” on four other guitarists over the years: Tommy Emmanuel, John Knowles, Jerry Reed, and Steve Wariner. Reed passed away in 2008, but the other musicians have shared special memories of Chet in these pages. Chet Atkins: Certified Guitar Player is a heartening read of essays and reminiscences that provide a revealing picture of Chet Atkins and his extraordinary life.

Whilst he undoubtedly made his name as one of the best exponents of country music and an exceptional guitarist, Chet Atkins was still capable of throwing a surprise. None more so than this album, the Other Chet Atkins, in which he plays the Spanish acoustic guitar, and not one of the tracks was country. Instead there are twelve latin influenced gems, including Begin the Beguine and Delicado. Hallmark.

Neck and Neck

Two generations of guitarists merge on this cleverly-titled album, with former Dire Straits virtuoso Mark Knopfler taking time off from scoring movies to join Chet Atkins, one of the fathers of electric guitar pickin’. And there’s some mighty fine country pickin’ on display here, with the duo joined by some of Nashville’s all-time finest players, including the late, great Floyd Cramer, Mark O’Connor, Larry Londin, Vince Gill, and Steve Wariner. The material ranges from choice country covers (Doc Watson’s “Poor Boy Blues,” Patsy Cline’s “Sweet Dreams”) to rock ‘n’ roll (“Yakety Ax,” a take on Boots Randolph’s “Yakety Sax”), jazz (Django Reinhardt’s “Tears”), a Knopfler original, and even the old standard “I’ll See You in My Dreams.” It sounds like they had fun, too! –Bill Holdship
