Shaver was a band that featured both Billy Joe Shaver and his son, Eddy. As the NY Times once wrote, “Shaver makes music to burn down the honky-tonks.” They also did a number of utterly gut-wrenching ballads. The band made five studio albums between 1993 and 2000 when, tragically, Eddy passed away. These 17 tracks are culled from those records.

Honky Tonk Hero

Willie Nelson says “Billy Joe Shaver may be the best songwriter alive today,” and legions of fans agree that Billy Joe is the real deal. Many describe his songs as pure poetry. Shaver sings about a life that’s been full of hard times, wild living, and a forty-year-long passion for his late wife Brenda. His songs are raw, honest, and so true that people hear the story of their own lives in his music. No wonder, then, that his songs have also been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Patty Loveless, John Anderson, Tom T. Hall, the Allman Brothers, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Tex Ritter.

In this compelling autobiography written with the assistance of Brad Reagan, Billy Joe Shaver looks back over a life that some might call a miracle of survival. His father abandoned the family before Billy Joe was born. Troubles in school and in the military turned him into a fighter, and a sawmill accident claimed two fingers and part of a third on his right hand. Yet his innate musical talent and the encouragement of an English teacher set him on the road to being a songwriter—and he never looked back. Shaver recounts his long struggle to break into the music business in Nashville and the success that came when Waylon Jennings recorded his songs on the 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes, which became a landmark of outlaw country music. Shaver movingly describes his own thirty-year, up-and-down career as a singer-songwriter in Nashville and Texas, his bouts with alcohol and drugs, his pleasure in touring with his son Eddy and their band Shaver during the 1990s, and the pain of losing Eddy, Brenda, and Billy Joe’s mother all within the year 1999-2000.

As full of life, heartbreak, and drama as any of Billy Joe Shaver’s songs, Honky Tonk Hero is the story of a man who not only walked on the wild side and lived to tell about it, but also got it all down in songs that many people consider to be some of the finest country music ever written.

He almost died by the hand of his father while he was still in his mother’s womb. He’s lost parts of three fingers, broke his back, suffered a heart attack and a quadruple bypass, had a steel plate put in his neck and 136 stitches in his head, fought drugs and booze, and buried his wife, son, and mother in the span of one year.

He’s Billy Joe Shaver, and he doesn’t just sing outlaw country songs, he lives them. And here are three of his greatest albums plus a non-LP single side, everything he recorded for the Columbia label from 1981-1987.

1981’s I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (but I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Someday) is bookended by couple of stone-cold Shaver classics, the title tune and “The Road,” but the whole album comes from place deep in the soul, with Billy Joe’s son Eddy providing the guitar heat. That release has been out of print for years; Shaver’s next album, 1982’s self-titled Billy Joe Shaver, has never been on CD, an oversight particularly inexplicable since it was something of a greatest hits album featuring starkly compelling interpretations of such enduring Shaver songs as “Old Five and Dimers Like Me,” “Been to Georgia on a Fast Train,” “Ride Me Down Easy” and “How Many Hearts Must You Break.” Finally, 1987’s Salt of the Earth was his first album of new material in six years and his last recording for another six; it neatly sums up Shaver’s world view by placing the songs “You Just Can’t Beat Jesus Christ” and “The Devil Made Me Do It the First Time” back to back! It, too, has been out of print for years.

Our Real Gone collection of these essential country music albums features the original album artwork to all three plus notes by Austin Chronicle writer Doug Freeman featuring quotes from Shaver himself. Remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios, Billy Joe Shaver: The Complete Columbia Recordings presents 31 tracks of pure Texas outlaw country from a man larger than life.
